Top five ways to reduce the cost of your shopping basket

Most people have seen their monthly outgoings increase over recent years, with everything from energy usage costs and vehicle insurance to petrol costs and the cost of food soaring. These days, doing a grocery shop is something that can leave your financially crippled for the rest of the month, with the mounting cost of even basic foods putting real pressure on consumer finances and no sign of consumer tax reduction in sight.

However, despite the rising cost of food it is still possible to cut the cost of your shopping basket through the use of a few simple steps. You may need to make a few changes in order to do this, such as changing your regular supermarket, but the savings can soon mount up, enabling you to reduce your outgoings considerably in some cases. Some of the ways in which you can reduce the cost of your shopping basket include:

Don’t buy items on special offer unless you need them: The leading supermarkets are always in stiff competition with one another. You will therefore often find that the various supermarkets are running special deals such as buy one get one free or buy one get one half price. Offers like these are designed to grab the attention of shoppers, but you have to remember that if you were not planning to buy the item in the first place then you are not saving money with these offers. These offers are great if they are available on items that you need and were planning to buy, but otherwise you will simply be purchasing something that you don’t need.

Shop at discount supermarkets: There are a number of supermarkets that offer a range of foods and household products at significantly lower prices than the leading supermarkets, and by doing the bulk of your shop at these stores you could make a good saving. It is therefore well worth making the switch and looking at the savings you can make by shopping at discount supermarkets.

Buy different items from different stores: Most people buy a range of different things when they do their weekly or monthly shop, from food and household goods to pet supplies and baby products. However, you may find that many of the things that you normally buy from the supermarket along with your food are actually available for a far lower price elsewhere. For example, you can often get household products such as bleach, washing up liquid, kitchen towels, and a variety of other products at far lower prices from discount shops than at the major supermarkets.

Avoid brand name foods: With some branded foods made by well known companies you can really tell the difference in terms of quality and taste compared to cheaper versions. However, there are also many products with which you cannot tell the difference other than in terms of the packaging. This means that we often end up paying for the name when we buy branded food products and could slash the price by simply opting for cheaper brands such as the supermarket’s own brand.

Consider shopping online: One of the problems many people have when they go out to supermarkets to do their shop is that they end up putting all sorts of items that they did not even plan to purchase in their trolleys. Supermarkets often set up displays to encourage this, making shoppers feel that they need to buy the product and that they are getting a great deal when in fact they are spending money that they had not planned to spend for something that they do not even need! Shopping online gives you more control in a number of ways. First off, you will not have the variety of eye-catching displays to tempt you into putting things that you do not need into your trolley. Secondly, the cost of your shopping is added up as you shop when you make your purchases online, so you can keep track of what you are spending before you checkout.
